We recently produced a short piece on the aspects of Trafalgar’s treatment that set us apart in the field of addiction treatment.
These are specific qualities that allow Trafalgar to provide all clients with the strongest possible foundation for lasting recovery. This blog offers some brief descriptions of these qualities.
CARF Accreditation
Trafalgar is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF is the international mark of excellence in addiction treatment. Treatment organizations must meet CARF’s exceptionally high standards of care in order to achieve accreditation.
Mental Health Focus
Our treatment is evidence-based and holistic, meaning we do not treat addiction in isolation. Our treatment is focused around concurrent disorders. This means that we help clients to identify the underlying mental health issues that co-occur alongside their addiction. Identifying the causes and consequences of addictive behaviour allows clients to develop methods for coping with problems in a healthy, progressive manner.
Clinical Expertise
Our Senior Clinical Advisor, Dr. Christine Courbasson, Ph.D., C.Psych structures and oversees our treatment program. Dr. Courbasson has previously held senior positions with the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health and the University of Toronto. She is one of the most esteemed figures in Canadian addiction treatment.
All of our clinicians are qualified to at least Master’s level. They are members of colleges and associations including:
- College of Psychologists Ontario
- Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
- College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
- The Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists
- The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation
Individual Therapy Sessions
Clients receive three sessions of individual therapy each week with our highly-qualified therapists. This is an unusually high provision for individual therapy, an essential aspect of addiction treatment. These sessions allow clients to identify and address the underlying causes and consequences of their addiction and mental health issues. We also provide our clients with full psychiatric assessments. As a result of the mental health focus of our treatment, delivered by psychologists, psychiatrists and registered therapists, our programs are HST-exempt.
Specialized Treatment
We have built strong relationships with many significant Canadian organizations. We have designed specialized programs to address the needs of members of these organizations. For example, we run programs dedicated to treating PTSD and concurrent addiction.
Our clinicians arrange specialized group sessions focused on specific addiction and mental health issues which are particularly relevant to our clients. These sessions help clients to prepare for the challenges they will face in recovery in a safe, controlled setting. They allow Trafalgar to maximize the efficacy of our treatment.
We also collaborate with case workers in order to provide the most effective, comprehensive treatment possible. We work to improve our specialized services and our employees are provided with ongoing professional development.
Partner Support Therapy
All Trafalgar’s programs include Family Therapy, Couples Therapy and Partner Support Therapy (PST). PST is a powerful, unique aspect of our residential programs. It is unique in the field of Canadian addiction treatment. While family therapy treats the addicted person alongside their loved ones, PST is focused exclusively on the needs of those close to our clients, preparing them to take care of themselves while supporting their loved one. We offer PST at no additional cost.
Family Therapy
Family Therapy and Couples Therapy also provide important support to the client and their loved ones, allowing them to work through problems between them. They help to establish open, progressive communication between the addicted person and those close to them. They also help loved ones to support the addicted person while looking after themselves.
Cue-Exposure Therapy
We are the first organization in Canada to provide Virtual Reality Therapy (Cue-Exposure Therapy) for addiction treatment. VR Therapy leverages immersive technology to replicate triggering scenarios for clients in a controlled environment and with the assistance of a therapist. This allows them to practice recovery methods and build resistance to relapse triggers so that. When they encounter these triggers in real life, they will be better equipped to cope with them.
Detailed Breakdowns
We provide detailed, comprehensive breakdowns of our program structures. Clients and their loved ones often find our transparent approach to the details, structure and schedule of treatment to be very reassuring and helpful.
Choice of Location
Trafalgar presides treatment at multiple locations. We offer residential programs at our Erin, ON and Port Hope, ON treatment centres. We also offer comprehensive outpatient programs and aftercare services at our midtown Toronto location. At each of our centres, we work hard to ensure that we maintain a calming environment that is conducive to recovery. All staff at all of our locations are highly-qualified and experienced in treating addiction.
Discharge Planning
We provide comprehensive discharge plans for our clients upon completion of treatment programs. This helps clients as they transition from treatment into a regular routine and beyond, as they continue their works toward lasting recovery.
Progress Reports
We also provide progress reports to case workers and referring organizations or health professionals, ensuring that we provide comprehensive and transparent treatment.
Comprehensive Aftercare Programming
We offer uniquely comprehensive aftercare programming at no additional cost to the client. This includes our Aftercare, ContinUcare and Continuation of Care programs.
Aftercare
After completing a treatment program with us, clients are entitled to weekly aftercare sessions on an ongoing basis.
ContinUcare
Our ContinUcare program allows clients to monitor their recovery progress and mental health after treatment through a series of questionnaires provided by our clinical team.
Continuation of Care
With Continuation of Care counselling, we support our clients long after graduation and through the transition back to home life. Continuation of Care counselling takes place for two months after treatment programs are completed. Clients discuss their progress with our Continuation of Care Program Manager during scheduled, weekly calls.
